I was struck by a car and can’t stop thinking about it, can mindfulness help?
I’m sorry that you had to suffer such a traumatic experience. Getting your life back to normal takes time. Even though your body may heal your mind must heal, too. Mindfulness will help you to understand that you are not your thoughts, and help to quiet the constant thoughts of the accident in your mind.
What makes Mindfulness meditation good for us?
So many of us spend our lives in the super-doing, automatic pilot mode, or obsessing about the past or future. The overall benefit of Mindfulness is living our lives in the present moment with awareness, it’s being alive in our own lives.
This awareness brings an appreciation for the little things, such as a beautiful sunset, a flower blooming, spending time with a loved one. As we become more engaged in our lives we begin to see that there is more “right” with us than “wrong” with us. Many of the “side effects” of Mindfulness meditation discovered in scientific research studies include a reduction in symptoms such as anxiety and depression as well as better concentration and greater stability in physical symptoms such as blood glucose levels and blood pressure.
How is Mindfulness different from other meditation practices?
Mindfulness is insight meditation. It is the practice of present moment awareness and increases our ability to see things as they arise clearly without judgment. Mindfulness facilitates both focusing and widening our attention as we become aware of ourselves and the world around us. The “goal” is to be more fully present in our lives.
There are many types of meditation practices that will contribute to your health and well-being. Many other practices have a specific focus such as building concentration, or one-pointed awareness. Different practices appeal to different people. It’s simply being comfortable with the one that you choose.
Do I need to have previous meditation experience?
No… The instructor will teach you everything you need to know, guiding you through the program and giving you the opportunity to explore and experience Mindfulness. For anyone that has experience with meditation or yoga in the past, the course can be a good refresher to rebuild a strong daily practice.
